In the fall of 2006 a national report by America's Promise Alliance, a nonprofit organization formed by retired Gen. Colin Powell, reported that children need five "promises" in their lives to become responsible adults.

• A Healthy start and healthy development

• Caring adults

• Effective education for marketable skills and lifelong learning

• Safe places and constructive use of time

• Opportunities to make a difference through helping others

New Hope is addressing these five areas of need and continues to look for ways to further help children who have a parent in prison acquire these "promises."
